Biography

Born in Sant Mateu (Castellón) Spain. He moved to Barcelona where he studied music at the Municipal Superior Conservatory of Music in Barcelona obtaining the highest qualifications and the following titles: Piano Teacher, Composition and Instrumentation Professional and Orchestra Conducting Professor, being his teachers: Joan Pich Santasusana , Manuel Oltra, Xavier Montsalvatge and Antoni Ros Marbà. Simultaneously to musical studies, he studied at the Central University of Barcelona, ​​obtaining a Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy and Letters, (specialization in French Romance Philology), University where he later studied the Doctorate courses in Art History.

National Vocation Award as Orchestra Conductor. Diploma in Orchestra Conducting by the Mozarteum of Salzburg (Austria) with Professor Carl Melles. He participated in the Besançon International Young Conductors Competition in the graduates and professionals section. (September 1973)

 

He conducted the Internal Orchestra of the Gran Teatro del Liceo for three seasons, as well as the Orchestra of the Barcelona Superior Municipal Conservatory of Music. He has also conducted the string orchestra ‘Camareta Instrumental de Barcelona’ and was musical director of the Zarzuela Company ‘Ferrán Rigual’ with which he has performed the main works of the lyrical genre in Spain and especially in Catalonia.

He has conducted two youth music bands at Padre Mañanet and Alpe schools. With the Big Band of the latter he won a national prize in TVE, in the programme «Gente Joven». He also conducted the Band Bonanova, the Music Band ‘Ciutat de l’Hospitalet’ and the Symphonic Band of Les Corts (Barcelona). As guest conductor he has conducted on several occasions the Municipal Wind Band of Barcelona and also the Unió Musical de Llíria, the Municipal Wind Band of Castelló, the Symphonic Municipal Wind Band of Seville, etc.

Musical adviser of music bands contests carried out by TVE, ‘Gente Joven’ and ‘Nueva Gente’ programmes. He has participated on several occasions as a member of the jury in musical composition and performance competitions and in music band competitions, including the International Wind Band Competition of the City of Valencia on several occasions.

As a composer he has won national prizes and has premiered works at the Palau de la Música and at the Auditori in Barcelona, on TVE, on TV3 and in various cities in Spain and abroad.

He has combined the concerts, with the teaching of music as a music teacher in secondary school, Professor of Harmony, Counterpoint and Accompaniment of the Conservatory of Music of Barcelona, ​​Inspector of Education in the specialty of Music of the Department of Education of the Generalitat of Catalonia.

He has numerous publications on the teaching and learning of music, including a series of ten articles on the “Instruments of the Orchestra and various musical formations” (Montsalvat Magazine 1975-76). A history of music in Catalonia and in the Valencian entitled ‘Music and musics a casa nostra’ (Teide publishing House, 1993), and ten textbooks on musical education in Primary, Secondary and high school, with CDs and educational guides, published by the Claret publishing house. The same publisher house also published a book entitled «Divertimento» (25 commented and minuted Musical Auditions).

He has been General Subdirector of Artistic Education of the Department of Education of the Generalitat of Catalonia, General Director of the ESMUC (Higher School of Music of Catalonia) and General Coordinator of the JONC (Young National Orchestra of Catalonia). He is currently continuing his musical activity as a director and composer.
